چکیده

We study online algorithms for the Canadian Traveller Problem (CTP) introduced by Papadimitriou and Yannakakis in 1991. In this problem, a traveller knows the entire road network in advance, and wishes to travel as quickly as possible from a source vertex s to a destination vertex t, but discovers online that some roads are blocked (e.g., by snow) once reaching them. It is PSPACE-complete to achieve a bounded competitive ratio for this problem. Furthermore, if at most k roads can be blocked, then the optimal competitive ratio for a deterministic online algorithm is 2k+ 1, while the only randomized result known is a lower bound of k + 1. In this paper, we show for the first time that a polynomial time randomized algorithm can beat the best deterministic algorithms, surpassing the 2k + 1 lower bound by an o(1) factor. Moreover, we prove the randomized algorithm achieving a competitive ratio of ( 1 + √ 2 2 ) k + 1 in pseudo-polynomial time. The proposed techniques can also be applied to implicitly represent multiple near-shortest s-t paths.

The United States and Canada as a coupled epidemiological system: An example from hepatitis A

BACKGROUND Hepatitis A (HA) is a low-incidence, non-endemic disease in Canada and the United States (US). However, a large difference in HA incidence between Canada and HA-endemic countries has made travel an important contributor to hepatitis A prevalence in Canada. There is also a (smaller) incidence differential between Canada and the US. Although the US has only moderately higher HA inciden...

Prevalence of Allergies and Food Intolerance: a Comparison Between the Persian Community and Canadians of European Descent

Background: The prevalence of reported allergic diseases is higher in North-America than in other countries around the world. Further, certain types of allergies are more common in some geographic regions or amongst different ethnic populations. This phenomenon has not been well studied amongst the Persian population in the Canadian context; therefore, the current study aimed to compare the pre...

An Eye on Travel: An Overview of Travel-Related Ocular Complications

Travellers are at risk of a diverse range of environmental and infectious conditions, some of which may affect the eyes and lead to blindness in severe cases. Travel-related ocular infections include onchocerciasis, leishmaniasis, cysticercosis, trachoma, dengue, loiasis, and leptospirosis. The travel medicine adviser should also recognise other hazards encountered during travel which may adver...
